What is Payment orchestration?

A layer that connects multiple processors, acquirers, and payment methods behind a single integration and routes each transaction optimally.

Definition

Payment orchestration abstracts multiple payment providers behind one API, then applies rules and machine learning to decide where to send each transaction: the acquirer with the best approval rate for that card and country, the cheapest route for that card type, or a backup when the primary is degraded.

Standalone orchestration platforms charge an additional per-transaction fee on top of processing. Full-stack providers that own multiple acquiring connections can offer the same routing benefits natively.

Example

A European issuer starts timing out at the primary acquirer. Orchestration detects the error spike within seconds and shifts that issuer’s traffic to a second acquirer, avoiding thousands of false declines.

How HL Hunt handles it

HL Hunt includes multi-acquirer smart routing, least-cost routing, and automatic failover on every account, so you get orchestration without a second vendor or a second fee.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs payment orchestration?

Merchants processing across multiple countries, those with high-volume card-not-present traffic, and any business where a one-point authorization change is material.

Does orchestration add latency?

Routing decisions in HL Hunt add under 10 milliseconds; the approval lift far outweighs it.
